The Club 2003/2004

With the advent of the new season, a new committee has been elected to steer the club through the new challenges ahead. We have been successful this season in securing a healthy intake of new players and as usual there is an impressive compliment of talent helping secure the future of the club.

Without any further ado a recap on last year’s season. On the whole very successful, we reached the semi finals of the National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) Cup. In addition we were victorious in the National Medics Sevens Tournament, emerging as overall winners for the second year running.

Fixtures 2004/2005

The fixtures for the coming season are as follows. In many instances we will be fielding more than one team per match. In this way we hope for greater involvement for all playing members as well as providing greater opportunities for the alumni and friends of the club to watch some quality rugby.

For the purpose of information, all home games will be played at Highfields University Playing Grounds - off University Boulevard, close to the main campus.

Events for your Diary

Saturday 13th November 2004: Alumni Match and Ball:

As is an annual tradition, the rugby club will hold its annual Alumni Dinner on Saturday 13th November 2004. This event includes our Alumni Vs Students match during the afternoon preceding the ball. Coincidentally we will also congregate to watch the international match at Moderns rugby club (England Vs Canada, K.O. 1400hrs). True to form, the day promises to be a successful event.

Saturday 20th November 2004: Tri-Med School Championships:

New for the season 2004/5 is the Tri-Medical School championships. To take place on 20th November 2004 at Highfields playing ground. The Championships will take place between Nottingham, GKT and Birmingham and will consist of a round robin tournament with twenty minute halves. There will of course be an opportunity for the teams to meet socially after the tournament and trade thoughts on the day’s activity.

TOUR

The Alumni Match 2003 (students victorious 30-25)

As is tradition, the rugby club tours to another city as an annual event. In previous years we have travelled to Amsterdam (2000/1), Dublin (2001/2), Prague (2002/3) and of course last years visit to the fair cities of Newcastle and Edinburgh. During this most recent excursion, we beat Newcastle 25 – 7 but were defeated by Edinburgh at the Academicals ground by a small margin. Interestingly we played this match on the pitch which played host to the first ever international match between England and Scotland. By all accounts a productive and enjoyable tour.

National Medic’s Sevens:

Having become a annual successful event, the Medics sevens will return to Nottingham. Dates for this year are to be confirmed, but likely to fall within the spring term. We look forward to this event and as reining champions are expecting further success. Further information will be forthcoming, so watch this space.

Future of the Club

This year’s committee has made several changes to the structure of the club. Central to this drive is an attempt to make the club more professional, is the appointment of a coach. This is intended to bring about a professional attitude towards the training commitment that is vital for a results focused club.

In addition to the on pitch performance, there is feeling within the committee that greater involvement with the Club’s extensive alumni will help retention of new members and increase the profile of the team. This will hopefully make it easier to establish sponsorship for future seasons.
