Dear Member, Alumni Weekend Nov. 8th & Nov. 9th 2003
It’s that time of year again when all thoughts turn towards Nottingham and the Alumni fixture looms in the near distance. Will I be fit enough to play? Will I get so drunk that I’ll agree to play? How can I avoid playing? Can I feign an injury but still turn up for the drinking? Can I miss the drinking and just turn up and play? I’ve heard it all over the last ten years from being in Australia (temporarily or permanently) to having an enlarged spleen; there are many reasons not to attend the weekend but only really one reason to attend. We all want the Alumni fixture to continue. One year we may like a weekend away. The only way to ensure that the weekend remains is to support it, so try and get along, even if it’s only to have one pint and then disappear. The format again this year is going to follow on from last year and we will try to play the games on the Saturday morning, have a few beers at Moderns and then reassemble for the dinner on Saturday evening. We are hoping that we will be able to field two sides again, as used to be the case, with the ‘more senior’ players in the 2nd XV and those who can remember what it feels like to be a student making up the 1st XV. The original Alumni Trophies from 1979 are still there to be played for, and since the demise of the Doctors game in February The Pegg Trophy will now be awarded to the ‘Player of the Weekend’. In view of the fact that we are now using Moderns facilities on a Saturday it is even more important that we can kick off on time. As usual the 2nd XV will kick off first at 11.00am with the first XV following straight on. I would ask therefore that if you are available to play if we could meet at 10.00am. We are aware that this year we clash with another notable fixture in the southern hemisphere, and we will try and arrange it so that we can watch the game in the club. In the evening we are again using the George Hotel. As usual we should meet at The George at 19.00 for 19.30 sit down. Please let me know ASAP, how many tickets you require and their names so I can do the table plan. Cost £30 per ticket and if you require vegetarian meals let me know. Lastly Mr Pegg sends his apologies, as he is unable to attend the event this year and has asked us to consider finding his replacement as President of the Alumni Society. He will therefore officially stand down as President at the Dinner next year, which will be the tenth Alumni dinner and the Silver Jubilee of the Alumni fixtures. (The dates for next year are 13th & 14th November 2004).
Once again a speedy reply would be appreciated. I can be contacted as usual at the numbers below. Look forward to seeing everyone Cheers
